Sunday 8-6-07 Day 2 - To Towner 44.3 Miles

Time-3 hr 8 min Max Speed-24.2 mph Ave Speed-14 mph Calories-1471

Today was a fairly easy ride. There was a little light rain and a small headwind when we were riding east. We left Velva around 6:15 AM and got to Towner about 9:45 AM.

This pair of geese got to dress like the rest of us this year

Bethel Free Lutheran Youth rest stop - an old school house converted to a warming house for the local snowmobile club - felt good for us too.

This little girl was so cute and in awe of all of us - trying to keep warm with her daddy's sweatshirt. The youth group decided to camp outside the previous night also so they could know how it felt for us.

Sheila and I arrived at the same time and decided to pitch our tents next to a small log cabin which could provide shelter for us or our bikes from the rain if necessary. There were no shuttles available, the portable showers hadn't arrived yet, so we walked the 4 blocks down to the high school to get cleaned up. Hung around the park and bought a sandwich and a monster cookie from a little boy who found it necessary to tell me he does accept tips!

My tent set up next to the small log cabin

Checking out the trees ready for sale at the nursery

Their trees were dripping with berrues

Since we arrived so early, I decided to sign up for a tour of the local tree nursery which turned out to be very interesting. While on the tour I got a call from my friend Marian who was joining the tour in Towner. She wanted to pitch her tent next to ours. After I returned, I helped her set up the tent and then showed her around and where everything was at. We got her registration packet, ate supper at the park, and visited with a few of her friends that were already riding on the tour (Bob, Kathy, Loren, Dave). Our entertainment was provided by the local state senator Ryan Taylor who told a bunch of jokes and did cowboy rope tricks. Got a chuckle watching Leanne (Sundance) learn how to swing a rope. Avoided a nap so sleeping was easy this evening.
